What Happens in Fades (Pass the Distance)
The episode's first act is the season's most frightening sequence. Capri surges out of D's shard and into Talia, dragging a lifetime of someone else's traumatic memories into a body that is already failing. Talia loses control in the street, pulling metal toward herself and hurting bystanders. Weak stops her with his hands and his voice rather than chrome he does not have, and it nearly kills him.
The medical answer arrives immediately after: Talia is terminally ill. Her illness has spread to her brain, her implants are the only thing keeping her upright, and every additional piece of hardware pushes her closer to psychosis. There is no clean option, and the show refuses to invent one.
Weak's response is to ask Roman to get D's shard. He is not thinking about D's mission or the danger; he has heard enough to believe the construct might be able to do something for her. Roman, who has spent five episodes being useful to dangerous people, agrees.
D says no, and the refusal is the hinge of his arc. The shard is the only power he has ever had that makes the people who destroyed his clan reachable. He is not going to hand it to a stranger's family problem.
The episode refuses to let that refusal be simple. D is not wrong that the shard is his only leverage, and he is not wrong that handing it over could get him killed. The show lets him be reasonable and selfish at the same time, which is considerably more uncomfortable than making him a villain.
The back half of the episode is D at his worst. He survives an ambush, reconnects with Capri after the separation, and then brutalises a captive he holds responsible for the massacre — not killing him, which is somehow worse, but extracting everything he can with the construct whispering in his ear. Roman watches. The camera is still running.

New Characters and Reveals
The construct can transfer between hosts, and it does so without consent. That single fact turns Capri from a power-up into a hazard, and it is why every faction in the season starts treating her as something to be contained rather than used.
The diagnosis also resets the show's stakes. Talia is not going to be cured by the end of the series; she is going to have to choose what she is willing to become in order to survive a little longer.
Songs in Episode 5
- “You Can't Run From Me” — Rico Nasty. Returns as Talia loses control and Weak tries to hold her.
Episode 5 Ending Explained
The torture scene is the point at which D stops being a protagonist the audience can root for without qualification. It is also the point at which Capri's influence becomes visible: his escalation tracks hers.
The episode's title is doing double duty. Things are fading — Talia's body, Weak's restraint, D's purpose — and the distance between the four leads is growing even as they orbit the same shard.
What makes the hour land is the contrast between its two halves. One is a family trying to keep a girl alive; the other is a man using a girl's stolen technology to hurt strangers. The show cuts between them without commentary, and the juxtaposition is the argument.
