What Happens in Someone That I Used to Know

The episode answers the question the previous three have been circling. The red apparition haunting D is Capri, a weaponised personality construct assembled from digitised human psyches. She is not a ghost and not a simple AI. She is a composite, and she needs a host.

D makes the season's first truly bad decision: he lets her stay. The bargain is straightforward — she gives him power, he gives her a body to live in. The show frames it as a contract between two people who each think they are using the other, which is exactly what it is.

With Capri aboard, D and Roman infiltrate an Arasaka archive with Roman filming. What they find is not a weapon schematic but a personnel file: deleted records linking D, Talia Yang and David Martinez to the same buried corporate project. The David Martinez reference is a deliberate provocation — same first name, different person, and the archive knows it.

Talia's thread runs in parallel and worse. A doctor's assessment confirms that she is on the edge of cyberpsychosis and that her tolerance for further implants is essentially gone. Maelstrom, having extracted what value it could, abandons her. Weak finds her and brings her back.

Capri's presence changes the texture of D's scenes rather than their outcome. He is faster, more confident and considerably less careful, and the show communicates the difference through framing: he is rarely alone in a shot once she arrives. Roman notices. Roman does not say anything, because the story is finally working.

The episode's last beat is its best. Roman brings D to meet Weak and Talia, and Capri — who has been running in D's head for the entire episode — reacts to Weak with unmistakable delight. The construct knows him. Nobody explains why yet.

New Characters and Reveals

Capri's true nature

A personality construct built from multiple digitised minds explains almost everything about her behaviour: the mood swings, the appetite for chaos, the way she talks like several people agreeing on a sentence. She is not malfunctioning. She is crowded.

The project connection

The archive files place D, Talia and David Martinez in the same programme. This is the season's central mystery and its most misread scene — the show is not saying D is David Martinez. It is saying the corporations catalogued them together, which is a far more damning claim about Night City than any resurrection plot.

Episode 4 Ending Explained

Capri recognising Weak is the hook, but the structural point is the merger. By the end of this episode every main character is in the same room, every relationship is established, and the show can stop introducing people and start hurting them.

It also quietly sets up the finale. Capri is not a tool that D picked up; she is a character with her own history, her own preferences and, as later episodes confirm, her own plans.

And it gives Talia the episode's most underrated scene. Told that Maelstrom has finished with her, she does not react with relief or despair; she simply recalibrates. That pragmatism is the first real sign that she is not a passive patient waiting to be saved, and it is what makes her later decision to accept Capri read as a choice rather than a defeat.
